Calvin United Presbyterian Church

The Calvin United Presbyterian Church of Scottdale was the result of the union of the United Presbyterian Church (1874) and the First Prebsyterian Church (1874). The union was consummated by the Presbytery of Redstone on Sunday, April 21, 1968.

The First Presbyteruan Church was formally organized on May 13, 1874, with 14 members. During its first few years , the church had no pastor nit received assistance in this regard from Presbyterian churches in this vicinity.

The first meetings of the church were held in a little school house erected on a site at Homestead Avenue and Pittsburgh Street. Others of the early meetings were held in the Reformed and Baptist Churches.

The first church building was built during the winter of 1876-1877 on the Westerly side of Chestnut Street, immediately across from the present church building a the corner of Chestnut and Mulberry Streets. It served the church well until April 15, 1900. The church had no manse until 1891 when the manse was erected at Loucks and Grant Street. The cornerstone for the present church building was laid October 6, 1898, and the building was completed in April 1900, and formally dedicated by appropriate services on Easter Sunday, April 15, 1900.

An addition which modernized the church and providing adequate Sunday School facilities as well as facilities for meetings and various educational programs was completed in 1927. The addition includes a large dining room and modern kitchen.

The original pike organ was a gift of Andrew Carnegie. In 1970m a new pipe organ, chancel and lighting were dedicated as the result of a bequest from Miss Eleanor Osburn. The organ chimes were presented by Mrs. Bess V. Cook in loving memory of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Campbell

The United Presbyterian Church was nurtured by the Mount Pleasant Congregation and the church was organized and received its first members in June 1874. In the early years the congregation had no house of worship of its own but enjoyed the hospitality of the United Brethren, the Baptist, and Reformed Churches until its firs building was dedicated in 1883.
